Our galvanic treatments

Through galvanic treatments, it is possible to improve certain characteristics of the product, such as resistance to corrosion or electrical, mechanical and optical properties.

Canali s.r.l. performs galvanic treatments internally for both internal production and contract work.

Our threaded rods, tie rods and all of our products can be subjected to the main surface treatments required by the market.

Electrolytic galvanizing

Electrolytic galvanizing is a process by which zinc is deposited on metal objects, thanks to the passage of electric current.

The operating temperature is 20-25°C – for this reason, it is commonly referred to as “cold galvanizing”, to distinguish it from hot-dip galvanizing which works at around 450°C.

With barrel galvanizing, which Canali s.r.l. performs at its Civate (LC) plant, the pieces are loaded en masse, using automatic systems, inside a plastic material equipment consisting of a barrel, placed in rotation around its own axis.

The advantages of electrolytic galvanizing are the resistance to corrosion, the gloss of the finished product and an extreme uniformity in the thickness of the deposited coating.

Zinc-nickel

Zinc-nickel is an innovative process of depositing zinc-nickel alloy (Zn-Ni, with a percentage of nickel in the alloy between 12% and 18%) on ferrous materials.

The zinc-nickel plating treatment offers several advantages compared to the simple galvanizing treatment: better protection against corrosion, wear resistance and thermal stress.

Phosphating

Phosphating (or phosphatization) is a chemical treatment which consists in the formation of a surface layer of zinc or manganese and iron phosphates.

Phosphating improves resistance to corrosion and facilitates any subsequent coating process.

Hot-dip galvanizing

Hot-dip galvanizing is an anti-corrosion treatment of steel which is applied by immersing, after a series of pre-treatments, the products in a bath of molten zinc. It is a process capable of protecting the material from oxidation for a long time, keeping its properties unaltered.

This finishing process is widely used for the protection of structural steel.

Geomet treatment 321 – 500/A

The Geomet treatment consists of sandblasting the pieces, then immersing them in a zinc and aluminium solution and then subjecting them to subsequent firing.

After the Geomet treatment, metals are significantly more resistant to environmental corrosion.

This anticorrosive, non-electrolytic and chromium-free coating does not cause hydrogen embrittlement and is therefore particularly suitable for the treatment of high-resistance products, such as, for example, tie rods of class 8.8 or higher.

Galvanizing and dehydrogenation up to 3 metres

For material class 10.9, further treatment is required after galvanizing.

This is the dehydrogenation that Canali s.r.l. applies to products up to 3 metres in length.

Dehydrogenation is necessary on materials which, having absorbed hydrogen during the galvanizing treatment, risk breaking due to fatigue or tension. Dehydrogenation takes place by heating, at at least 180°C for two hours, as soon as galvanizing has been performed, or with a thermal cycle requested by the customer with their specifications.
